Should You Smile In Your Headshot?

Smile Headshot Portrait

To smile or not to smile? When it comes to professional headshot photos there are no rules on smiling, but there is a right answer to the question posed.

I’m of the mind that a professional headshot or portrait should reflect your presence. Any photography that represents your personal brand should showcase your unique personality, energy, and experience. Your captured expression should project who you are as a person.

What is the purpose of your headshot? Is it for a company website, casting call, LinkedIn, social media, or dating app? Knowing where your photo will be used is key to determining how you should present yourself. That said, why not have fun with it and capture a range? Having a portfolio of looks to pull from is not limited to actors and models. Nobody said your headshots have to be static, serious, and boring.

However you choose to behave in front of the camera, it’s important to achieve a level of comfort so genuine, confident expression shines through. This is why we like to keep things light and fun during our shoots, all while coaching our clients toward the perfect shot.

Don’t overthink it. Keep it simple and just be you! We’ll handle the rest.
